An interesting and original idea that was well presented, but did not fully live up to the potential the story had.

3rd Daybreakers
2010 Barely OK 8 Points

This film is about the fall of human kind and the rise of Vampirism. The entire world is ran by vampires and they are running low on their food sources. The humans are dying off and they have to try and find an alternate way to survive, so that the human kind can replenish themselves. Edward Dalton is scientist, trying to find an alternate food source for his kind and is sympathetic for the human race.

This film might be a little too intense for children, but for me, I thought that it lacked something.

7th X-Men: First Class
2011 Great 83 Points

First class prequels are Hollywood mutants, crisply intelligent rather than trite – obligatory touchstones notwithstanding. X-Men: First Class surpasses that standard, rebooting a tired saga with fresh casting, well grounded plot devices and an engaging mix of resonant themes.

Marvel achieves this alchemy by putting a strong ensemble of stars in front of the behind-the-camera studs from "Kick-Ass":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/2336-kick-ass and "Thor":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3112-thor, two other smart superhero movies. As executive producing goes, that's a loc…

Baby Doll is a mistreated orphan trapped in an asylum who is due to be lobotomized. Can she save herself and a gang of equally hot woman from their fates? Well, if you are empowered with a male-mesmerizing dancing talent that results from fantasizing about killing monsters and bad guys with martial arts and big guns, you sure can.

A patchwork quilt of surreal thriller fused with fantasy laden martial arts with a revenge story line. This movie is all over the place – with the only discernible central theme of maximizing the exposure and use of beautiful women in skimpy outfits perfor…

12th A Royal Affair
2012 Really Great 83 Points

A Royal Affair is truly regal, with a King, his Queen, their courtiers, grand councils and balls in castles.

  • Infidelity so grand – so right – it was ultimately forgiven by the cuckold King of Denmark.
  • History made, the Enlightenment brought to the Danes and their colony of Norway.
  • Romantic history in the extreme. Royally romantic. "Live from 1772" Seems like it anyway.
  • All of it real, a true story. Better yet – one of the great true stories.

Princess Movies have a new member in their esteemed royal court, right up there with "The Young Victoria":http://www.viewguide…

2010 OK 19 Points

Jeff Bridges is a virtual world designer who mysteriously disappears. Years later, his young son exploits a clue and enters that virtual world to find him. This movie’s highlight is the sci-fi effects of living in a virtual world, and the results are fairly impressive, albeit with some glitches – like the fabrication of a young clone of Jeff Bridges that never comes off quite right. Don’t look to make too much sense of the story-line, just enjoy it for the effects, skin-tight suit clad women, and cool action scenes with futuristic motorcycles.

22nd Just Go With It
2011 Barely OK 83 Points

Better than expected romance and typically painful Adam Sandler comedy make Just Go With It less awful than Sandler's usual. The former comes from RomCom pro Jennifer Aniston, who creates some palpable chemistry with Sandler; The latter from Sandler's recent shtick of caricaturing Hollywood archetypes for lifestyle comedy.

This time he's a Hollywood plastic surgeon who acts like a jerk but has a heart of gold. He was a similarly drawn Hollywood agent in "Grown Ups":http://www.wikpik.com/movie_reviews/2850-grown-ups, his previous outing. What's next? A sitcom star who cavorts with p…

27th Battle: Los Angeles
2011 Barely OK 22 Points

I’m a sucker for Humans v Alien movies, and when the humans are Marines, I’m a goner! One of my all time favorites of this genre is Starship Troopers. Battle of LA taps in to that same Hoo-Rah! Get them! emotion. It has sort of an aliens in Mogadishu feel. Although it has plenty of moments of suspense and action, as well as decent special effects – it fails to get past too many servings of cheese and overly-cliche depictions of war-time Marines.

28th Despicable Me
2010 Good 12 Points

Such a cute damn movie. Could have been more – mostly in the humor department – but as it was, it was very entertaining with a great heart. Despicable Me centers around Gru – a supervillain who is being upstaged by a newcomer, so he sets out to complete the ultimate heist. He's going to steal the moon. The only problem is, the newcomer who has upstaged him so far, has the shrinking ray that Gru will need to shrink the moon and steal it. Thats where the girls come in. Gru sees the girls selling cookies door to door and decides to use them to get into the newcomers house and get the shr…

30th War Of The Worlds
2005 OK 17 Points

Tom Cruise stars in one of the latest re-telling of the famous H.G. Wells tale. This is quickly recognizable as a Spielberg production, with ET-esque creatures, fantastical alien ships, and a family touch with dad Tom Cruise and cute daughter Dakota Fanning. It was entertaining to be sure, but I found the premise of how the Aliens planned to take over the earth, as well as what they did with humans just a little hokey for today’s sci-fi-standards. And possibly the most annoying thing was how throngs of people insisted on staying together and running in same direction whenever chased. It …

31st The Best Exotic ...
2012 Very Good 17 Points

Take a colorful cohort of old British retirees, send them to India where they’ve been promised an elegant and beautiful spot to retire, and then make lemonade from lemons. Best Exotic is a cute film, with an endearing quality that kept me (the most avid of action short-attention-span film lovers) interested throughout the meandering adventure. The India setting was great to be sure, but the killer grip was from the cast of top notch actors. Or, to quote a line in the film: “Things haven’t worked out as I’d expected. They rarely do, but what happened instead is the good stuff”.

This surprisingly effective revenge thriller plays better than its formulaic trailer might suggest. The mix of A-List star, well written script and competent direction injects plenty of life into an implausible set-up and the resulting cat-and-mouse games.

35th My Week with Mar...
2011 Good 66 Points

Showbiz legends Marilyn Monroe, Lawrence Olivier, Vivien Leigh & Arthur Miller give My Week with Marilyn more sizzle than it deserves. A cinematic goddess descends to live amongst the hoi polloi and everyone loses their minds, the men mostly, the women indirectly through their men. Marilyn's also crazy.

Michelle Williams essays Marilyn Monroe resplendently, albeit more in long shot than closeup. There was only one Marilyn in closeup. Williams gives the movie’s best pseudo-celeb performance, then Branagh's Olivier, Ormond's Leigh & Dougray Scott's Arthur Miller. Dominic Cooper's Milton …

36th The Bourne Legacy
2012 Good 83 Points

The first Bourne-less Bourne sequel felt more like a slog than a thrilling chase. Then its climax felt like a pause, which it is … for the next episode. So after more than two hours of frenetic activity, it wasn't clear the movie was actually over. Some legacy.

Let's stipulate that most reviews of The Bourne Legacy are very positive, including "from the estimable BrianSez":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3593, whose taste is often in-line with mine. To each their own however. I kept waiting for the movie to tickle, to thrill or to show me something new. When it didn't an…

37th Ted
2012 Really Great 83 Points

Comic genius, thy name is Seth MacFarlane, the writer, director and voice of Ted, a wildly ill-behaved "living" teddybear. The movie's conceit is that a grown man's arrested development gets enabled by this magical best buddy, who has taken on nothing but bad habits since leaving chronological boyhood behind.

Wake and bake? Check.
Blow off work? Check.
Avoid commitment? Check.
Indulge prejudices? Check.
Live vicariously? Check.

Fortunately MacFarlane's creation – coupled with a tremendously appealing cast – makes for a flat-out hilarious movie. Often appalling, yes. But …

38th End of Watch
2012 Great 83 Points

I avoided End of Watch when it came out in 2012, thinking it was just a steroidal TV Cop Show, moviestar Jake Gyllenhaal notwithstanding. Then David Ayer's movie demanded attention, given "BrianSez's effusive review":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3633-end-of-watch and Ayer's recent masterpiece "Fury":http://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/4133-fury. My verdict? It is a big screen Cop Show, and a great one at that.

The movie presents as reality video on the big screen, facilitated by Gyllenhaal's hand-held video-cam, which he has 'cause he's taking a video production course. Ad…
