3rd Spider-Man 3
2007 Barely OK 70 Points

A tangled web of storylines, inexplicable contrivances and desultory performances mark Spider-Man 3 as the end of the line for the original Spider-Man team. Thus it's no surprise that the next Spidey movie will feature a new director and new actors.

As for this installment, it's barely OK for time-passing family entertainment.

Meh – This could have been much better. Unlike other critics, I don't fault the retread attempt, but the execution was pretty uninspiring. Spidey flys around and kicks-butt, and you get to learn more about his character – but the story was overly cheesy and the plot-line contrived. Enjoy the bad-guy bashing, but don't expect anything of the caliber of Dark Night Rises.

2012 Great 83 Points

Imagine there's no Spider-Man. It's easy if you try.
No web below us, above us only sky.

Imagine Spider-Man as if Toby Maguire never wore the suit and James Franco were still a sensitive nobody. Seen thusly, The Amazing Spider-Man is a great movie, notwithstanding a treacly story that's often tinny.

Did Columbia & Marvel need to reboot Spider-Man just a decade after "its first big screen incarnation":http://www.viewguide.com/movies/211532? No, but they've done a creditable job, in part by locating the story when Peter Parker was still a school kid. This makes it a nifty hig…

2017 Really Great 83 Points

Spider-Man hasn't lacked great reboots, but this third is the greatest yet. It's the most High School by far, if not the first set in that adolescent crucible. Mostly, Spider-Man: Homecoming benefits by being the first Spider-Man movie to be produced by Marvel, odd though that may seem.

Marvel means a lot, a whole lot when it comes to superior superhero movies, not least having Robert Downey Jr. drop into the picture. Megawattage superstar power comes with him, and that's without the miraculous Iron Man suit, which is now voiced by the Oscar-winning Jennifer Connelly. Megawattage.

2002 Perfect 13 Points

Yeah, yeah, yeeaahh!! Bash this movie all you want!! Bash it for its cheesey goodness and its popcorn movie fun, but this is a childhood favorite of mine. I have so many good memories with this film. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Even though another comic book film called "X-Men" came out a couple years earlier, this is the film that TRUELY started the new wave of super hero films in the 21st century. After years and years out of the public eye, Evil Dead helmer Sam Raimi made a return to movies. He brought one of the greatest super heros to the silver screen.

The film b…

Peter finds great success in his superhero duties, but can’t seem catch a break (or even a snack), as he rides an emotional roller coaster while trying to balance his personal life, attend college, and make a living. Wait I don’t think Spider-Man has enough challenges…how about a nemesis to battle against? In this episode, Dr. Otto Octavius (a.k.a. Dr. Octopus), well played by Alfred Molina ("Maverick"), fits the bill.

7th Spider-Man: Far ...
2019 Perfect 66 Points

The fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in sticky good hands as Spider-Man improves to perfection in Tom Holland's sophomore outing. Indeed, Far from Home gives us everything we want in a blockbuster.

It starts by playing out the changing-of-the-guard that began in the still-in-theaters "Avengers Endgame":https://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/4866-avengers-endgame, from Robert Downey Jr's "Iron Man":https://www.viewguide.com/vulists/792-iron-man-series to the friendly neighborhood superhero who's still in high school.

Spider-Man: Far from Home also has lots of laughs, char…

Third time's another charm for the Spider-Man Home team. Or would that be the eighth time? It is a three series climax, a #ClimaxCubed. Marvel pulls it off — at a level previously seen only by "The Avengers":https://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3507-the-avengers.

This is ultimate OG Marvel, a flashback to the Before Times when Marvel movies were de rigueur cultural events, not like the Woke Times of '20 & '21, when Marvel movies are often exercises in woke scolding.

No Way Home perfectly completes the best Spidey trilogy.

9th Spider-Man: Into...
2018 Perfect 66 Points

Into the Spider-Verse is the best Spider-Man movie ever, by far, and also the best 2018 movie I've seen. No surprise, it represents the super-pairing of Stan Lee & Marvel's Spider-Man with über-brilliant pop culturalist Phil Lord, he of the super smart and buoyantly funny "Lego Movie":https://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/3990-the-lego-movie and "LEGO Batman Movie":https://www.viewguide.com/movie_reviews/4488-the-lego-batman-movie.

Basically, Into the Spider-Verse does to Spider-Man what The LEGO Batman Movie did to the Caped Crusader: make him very meta and very funny, then use th…
