Southpaw
Good 83 Points 2015

Southpaw telegraphs its punches. They do connect, but lose much of their impact because you see most coming. That said, Jake Gyllenhaal is an impressive physical actor, if not an exceptionally charismatic one.

The result is a movie that’s worth a cheap’o rental for boxing movie fans, albeit …

Creed
Good 17 Points 2015

So you didn’t think there would be more to Stalone’s Rocky franchise? Well here is Creed ladies and gentlemen! The movie was good, but not great; the ’I’ll fight (the next match) if you fight (cancer)" tugged at a few heart strings – as did the re-make of the theme song, but that’s about it. E…

Hands of Stone
Good 66 Points 2016

Hands of Stone is a ham-fisted biopic of boxing great Roberto Durán. Raging Bull it’s not, notwithstanding Robert De Niro in a major role. That said, it does provide clear insight into Durán’s impoverished childhood, rise to prominence and fall from grace after his “No Mas” capitulation to Suga…

The Hammer
OK 17 Points 2011

Uplifting story of Matt Hamill, the first deaf wrestler to win the national collegiate championship. This film more or less follows the formula of any sports story: underdog faces personal challenges, he is motivated by his coach (in this case his grandpa), works hard at success, achieves great …

The Winning Season
OK 17 Points 2009

Drunkard has-been coach Bill is given a second chance… with the Girl’s basketball team. This, in a Hoosier town where basketball is king. The movie has a predictable formula: rocky start with girls who aren’t that in to it, tough going with ex-wife and estranged daughter, turnaround when t…

Undefeated
OK 17 Points 2011

Undefeated is a bit of a misnomer – the Manassas Tigers actually lost their first football game, and by hook and by crook – coach Bill Courtney took this scrappy underprivileged neighborhood team to Tennessee greatness. Bill himself narrates, so you get his story as well as his inspirational mes…

Goon
OK 17 Points 2011

Tell the truth – you like to see fights at hockey games, right? If so, Goon is for you. This tongue-in-cheek hockey film is primarily an understated comedy that follows the nicest bouncer you’ll ever meet and his grand entrance to the one professional sport that appreciates a good brawler: h…

United
OK 17 Points 2011

A dramatic tale of Manchester United in the 50’s and the Munich air crash that killed 8 team members. As with most sports movies, Manchester starts with the usual formula: work hard, come from behind, do great things. Then Munich happened. Just like you’d expect, things got depressing – de…

Point Break
OK 17 Points 2015

Not a disaster, but you won’t be missing much if you skip this one. It was filmed as if they came up with the action sequences first, then cobbled a lame story to tie it together. Except the writing part fails miserablly. Oh well.

Gracie
Barely OK 17 Points 2007

An overly formulaic yarn about the girl who won’t be let in to the all-boy soccer scene during the 70’s. To me, the best thing about this movie was the 70’s rock sound bites. The actors are not very memorable, but the flick will be enjoyed by tweener kids.
