The Piano Teacher
Great 2 Points 2001

Intriguing and awkward, confusing at some points, but really exceptional. Michael Haneke is the master of stories of everyday life and even when his story is simple, it won’t be plain. This time he confronts us with an unusual and a little bit old fashioned part of world, where people still make …

The Cotton Club
Good 3 Points 1984

The “Cotton Club” is one and and a half performances away from being a very good for great movie, but as they say “If my grandma had wheels, she’d have a trolley”. Well that’s not quite accurate but overall it is a very appealing, ambitious movie that is marred by a very over the top performance …

That Thing You Do
Perfect 3 Points 1996

A film directed, written, and starred in by Tom Hanks can’t be bad right? This feel good film with a catchy sound track from 1996 starred Hanks with little known actors Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry, Tom Everett Scott, Giovanni Ribisi and Charlize Theron as a bunch of small town kids in the 60’s. Follo…

Spice World
Good 11 Points 1997

Spice World gets a lot of flack for being a film that stars The Spice Girls [it’s the cool thing to do when you diss these ladies]. But given the chance, it’s a really appealing and charming film with a lot of energy and spunk. Watching five days in the lives of the Spice Girls is entertaining as…

Fantasia
Great 12 Points 1940

What an innovative film for its time (1940) — visual cartoon interpretations done by Disney animators of classic musical masterpieces performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Some of the scenes are pretty intense, which I think makes this less of a young child’s film and more of a teen-to-adult …

The Red Violin
Very Good 12 Points 1998

I liked the movie, though I thought I would enjoy it more because of all the hype I had heard. However, that being said, it is an interesting romp through history following the path of this single violin. Plus, with a soundtrack that can’t be beat, you’re sure to enjoy this film.

Perfect 12 Points 2000

This film is AWESOME. It starts as a mini documentary about the musical artists who performed the songs in the Coen Brothers’ film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but then spends most of its time showing the live concert in Nashville, TN…

Perfect 12 Points 2002

Yes! Hot music, hot band, hot film. If you’re looking for a great musical experience, I’d say put this at the top of your queue. And don’t worry, all you red-blooded Americans, Natalie Maines only mentions Toby Keith once :-)
