Great 4.0
Never having read the novel, I can only judge this film based on its own merit which I believe most book-to-screen adaptations should be judged by. Many reviewers criticized the film for its pace and CGI antagonists, but with a $150 million movie, one has to believe that the film makers knew what they were doing. The pacing seems just right with the right amount of story set up and action to keep the film even keeled. While it does become fairly formulaic at times with the jump factor and pulling of the emotional heart strings, this is another worthy addition to Will Smith’s acting resume.

Really Great 4.5
This movie is probably most often compared to Cast Away starring Tom Hanks. While Will Smith may not be quite the actor that Tom Hanks is, being the only character throughout most of the movie. There can also be the comparison of Smiths dog and Hanks volleyball Willson. Probably due to the acting caliber of Hanks, the ball is a more cared about companion than the canine companion.

Really Great 4.5
The deserted city scape alone is very well done and can have the average movie goer scratching their head in amazement. The trained eye can also be amazed at the CG detail the animators put into the project but clearly see a few shots are miniatures. The CG zombie antagonists are interesting and detailed in their own way yet have fewer human characteristics than a “believable” movie might have had.

Risqué 1.8
With enough violence to please an action movie goer, it doesn’t get gory or unbearable at any point.

Sex Innocent 1.0

Violence Fierce 2.0

Rudeness Salty 2.5
-
Surreal 2.2
While one can wrestle with where to rate the reality of this film, with a situation such as this being all too much of a possibility, zombie people eating immune virus survivors is surely surreal.

I heard mixed reviews on this one, so I lowered my expectations. I was, however, pleasantly surprised that it turned out so well. Its good as a film if you don’t compare it to the novel and the other film adaptations. I was a little afraid that this would turn out like Cast Away but this one was a lot better. |
