Good 139 Points 2006

Highly stylized though affecting movie brings a comik sensibility to an ancient battle. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would, since King Leonidas makes a great hero and his wife a worthy Queen.

Stop Loss
Good 17 Points 2008

Another war movie that tries to impart the senselessness of it all. Similar to some other war movies, this film focuses on the difficult adjustment that soldiers have to make when back from the battlefield. Tortured minds haunted and all that. This time, a band of friends all from the same home-t…

Body of Lies
Good 83 Points 2008

Given the dismal state of Islamist terror movies, this surprisingly evenhanded thriller tops the heap, though its disjointed plot comes together slowly and Leonardo DiCaprio’s CIA character lacks charisma. Fortunately he’s flanked by two great actors, the estimable Russell Crowe and the slickly …

The Hunting Party
Good 83 Points 2007

Death-defying TV journalists star in their own movie – or at least their moviestar alter egos do – in The Hunting Party. Set in the badlands of Serbia during and after the Bosnian War, the movie has fresh resonance now that NATO is currently seeking to dislodge another war criminal, this time …

Valkyrie
Good 96 Points 2008

Valkyrie is an ultimate Nazi movie hamstrung by a lack of Germans: As victors, the Americans and British get to write the history of WWII, but they should at least have used Teutonic actors for this German Army story. Instead Allies play Krauts in Bryan Singer’s movie, complete with more Briti…

Redacted
Good 17 Points 2007

Redacted is filmed in a ‘faux documentary’ style (read: hints of Cloverfield) and focuses on the American occupation in Iraq and an ugly incident in Samara. The movie stands out from otheres of the genre in the way it confrontings the subject in a raw uncut fashion. Certainly De Palma was trying…

The Big Red One
Good 17 Points 1980

Retro style War movie with a bit of irreverence to make it popular for 1980’s movie goers. It is sure-fire entertainment for war movie buffs, with a subtle sarcasm and left-field humor that gives it a broader appeal. A few deep scenes reminds you that war sometimes has a valid purpose.

Von Ryan's Express
Good 5 Points 1965

Frank Sinatra stars as Col. Joseph Ryan, an American Army Air Corp pilot in WWII who is shot down in Italy and taken as a prisoner of war in the film Von Ryan’s Express. Although known for his golden voice, he refrains from singing in this action flick, instead flexing his considerable acting …

The Red Baron
Good 17 Points 1971

A pretty engaging film about the infamous Baron von Richtoven — following him from his youth and on in to his WW I deadly (deadly to the enemy that is) activities. I didn’t research how accurate to history the film was, but it was remarkable how well they shot the flying scenes and gave a seemi…

Good 17 Points 1999

A surprisingly good movie about Missouri guerrilla fighters called the Bushwackers (now I know where this term comes from) who hide in the woods and skirmish against Union soldiers and loyalists called Jayhawks. The film has plenty of fighting, including an impressive gathering of rebels to ave…
