An Affair of Love
Great 66 Points 1999

Smart, Sexy, Passionate, French. A great date movie, with smart, sexy dialogue that manages to outweigh the impressively passionate sex. This fine Parisian relationship film – French title Une liaison pornographique – has all the hallmarks of French filmic culture: sophisticated, non-impulsi…

Must Love Dogs
Great 10 Points 2005

OK, so it is a bit of a chick-flick; however, I would like to stress how much the guy I was watching the movie with loved it. John Cussack was great and the movie was fast-paced with witty dialogue. A great cast of actors ensured a polished, enjoyable film.

Atonement
Great 105 Points 2007

Hardly a chick flick, though focused predominantly on a doomed love affair and populated largely by talkative females, Atonement delivers its real wallop when it goes to war, offering a stunning battle scene not out of place in the first rank of war movies.

A legitimate Best Picture candidat…

2 Days in Paris
Great 17 Points 2007

This is my perfect idea of a great date movie. It appeals to my east-coast sarcastic sense of humor, and has hilarious perspectives that both women and men will identify with. Very Woody-Allen-esque — if you have ever been to France, or if you identify with the French view of Americans, you wil…

Great 17 Points 2003

Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray are a remarkably well paired set of wayward souls who meet by chance in Japan. Amidst the surreal and techno-quirky backdrop of Tokyo, they find solace in each-other – a perfect escape from the hum-drum realities of home. Wonderfully written, directed, and fi…

Eternal Sunshin...
Great 80 Points 2004

Few love stories are so exquisitely tortured as the one in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Jim Carrey’s sad sack wants to forget his quirky lover, played winningly by Kate Winslet. Turns out there is a quack who offers a mind-wash. Perfect!

Except it’s not.

However it does set u…

Great 17 Points 2012

A great twist on a classic tale. No, more than a twist, Huntsman churns everything around to the point that there are only a few similarities left, and when you catch them, it is exciting. Nevertheless, the adaptation is great. A scary and cold Charlize Theron evil queen, a vulnerable yet strong…

American Gigolo
Great 66 Points 1980

American Gigolo kickstarted the Eighties. It made the Seventies suddenly – instantly – yesterday. Unkempt & brassy gave way to sleek & sophisticated, disco to New Wave. How? Gere wearing Armani, driving a Mercedes, listening to Blondie in Schrader’s glimmering California masterpiece, that’s…
