OK 66 Points 1997

The Band was a throwback during their Sixties heyday. Half a century later, they seem doubly backdated. Thus this documentary about their best album is worth seeking out only for true fans. For a onetime casual fan like me, it was mildly interesting and minimally affecting.

Still, _The Nigh…

Spice World
Good 11 Points 1997

Spice World gets a lot of flack for being a film that stars The Spice Girls [it’s the cool thing to do when you diss these ladies]. But given the chance, it’s a really appealing and charming film with a lot of energy and spunk. Watching five days in the lives of the Spice Girls is entertaining as…

Good 17 Points 2003

If you are a Pink Floyd fan, then this movie should be on your to-see VuList. A thorough journey in to the band-member’s viewpoints on the music they created. It is very apparent that these guys know there wasn’t much they could do to top that album, and that album defines them even to this day….

Beyond the Sea
Good 83 Points 2004

The Peter Principle personified: Kevin Spacey reached his level of incompetence by writing, directing and starring in Beyond the Sea, a surreal biopic of Bobby Darin. The starring part was mostly fine.

The writing and directing parts, not so much.

Darin’s terrific songs make the movie an…

Good 66 Points 2010

French musical sensation Serge Gainsbourg explains himself in this surreal biopic. Largely unknown here in America, Gainsbourg was a cross between Dylan, Sinatra and Leonard Cohen in France. The women he squired – including Brigitte Bardot during her superstar heyday – comprise a good part of h…

The Cotton Club
Good 3 Points 1984

The “Cotton Club” is one and and a half performances away from being a very good for great movie, but as they say “If my grandma had wheels, she’d have a trolley”. Well that’s not quite accurate but overall it is a very appealing, ambitious movie that is marred by a very over the top performance …

Magic Mike XXL
Good 17 Points 2015

Tons of laughs form the Channing Tatum and crew. I mean, how could you not find the premise of following a stud-muffin crew on their final blowout funny. Just the story generates lols, but the cast does a great job of stretching that out for the entire film.

Rock the Kasbah
Good 17 Points 2015

A fun little jaunt to Afghanistan by the quirky Bill Murray. Even with his increasingly old and grizzled demeanor, he continues to pull off that special brand of snarky humor, even if it is a bit more subdued than in days of old. And speaking of subdued, don’t blink or you might miss Bruce Will…

Juliet, Naked
Good 66 Points 2018

Charming romcoms that are more intelligent than LOL funny are worth their weight in popcorn. Juliet, Naked is lightly buttered, a fine time at the movies for smart comedy fans as much as for lonely hearts.

An exceptionally strong cast centers on the serene beauty of brainy Rose Byrne, who i…

Rock I ran. Whoops, make that Rock Iran, as in the music of rebellion from the theocratically oppressed country threatening nuclear Armageddon. This revolutionary paradox makes Persian Cats the most important political movie of the year. A slice-of-life take on the underground rock music sce…
