  1. Quality
  2. Pretty Bad 1.5

Another comedy involving a comedian who dresses in drag. A premise we’ve seen time and time again, leaving little new ground to cover.

This time it’s Adam Sandler, who plays both Jack, a successful advertising executive, and Jill, his obnoxious, but big-hearted sister who comes to visit for the holidays. Wearing the obligatory dresses, and oversized fake chest, he portrays Jill as loud, crude, and speaking with his trademark higher pitched lisp. Many of his previous films have featured the same voice, and those of you who watched him on Saturday Night Live surely will recognize it as well.

The only saving grace for this mess, is Al Pacino, who falls in love with Jill. Thankfully, his ability to mock himself, makes the film at least a bit tolerable. Also, there is a bevy of cameo appearances that keep the astute movie-goer watching. Sandler has employed this tactic before, notably with Bob Barker in Happy Madison.

Otherwise, this film was the mess I was afraid it was going to be. I would suggest waiting for it to come out on video.

  3. Barely OK 2.0
  4. Male Stars Barely OK 2.0

Adam Sandler has shown the ability in the past to make decent films. Or at least films that posses some modicum of intelligence. This one isn’t one of them.

Al Pacino’s effort keeps the rating of this component from being considerably lower. One has to wonder why he chose to do THIS film.

  5. Female Stars Pretty Bad 1.5

Katie Holmes goes through the motions, but doesn’t do much more.

  6. Female Costars Barely OK 2.0
  7. Male Costars OK 2.5

Disappointed with myself for choosing to watch this, I at least enjoyed trying to spot as many cameos as possible. It appears as though Sandler invited any one he has worked with, or watched on TV, to participate. From the Sham-Wow guy to Jared from Subway. Quite an eclectic cast.

  8. Barely OK 2.0
  9. Direction Pretty Bad 1.5

In particular, the editing was atrocious!

  10. Play Barely OK 2.0
  11. Music OK 2.5
  12. Visuals OK 2.5

Some good comedic images, but few and far bewteen.

  13. Content
  14. Tame 1.5
  15. Sex Innocent 1.5
  16. Violence Fierce 1.6
  17. Rudeness Polite 1.3
  18. Glib 1.9
  19. Circumstantial Surreal 2.1
  20. Biological Glib 1.8
  21. Physical Glib 1.8

“Sandler is a like a neurotic man with intimacy issues. As soon as the film shows a little humanity here come the fart jokes.” Brilliant observation.

Not to worry, a Pretty Bad Movie disappears off the Top 5 pretty quick. Good choice on the regrade. Gotta call a dog a dog.

Gotta love the Sham-wow. After losing sleep over this movie last night, and after further review, I’ve decided to downgrade it to pretty bad. Although Pacino is great, it still is a dog of a movie, and one you’ll want to wait for on video.
