  1. Quality
  2. Barely OK 2.0

A documentary that chronicles the first year in the lives of four babies from four different cultures. Have you ever feigned interest as an acquaintance cornered you to show you an endless stream of youtube videos and pictures of their kid? This film eventually felt like that.

Although the premise of comparing and contrasting four different ways babies live their first life is interesting from a social studies standpoint, this film is done without any narration. The kids are cute, but after a while, I lost interest. It really should not come as a surprise that kids play with whatever is available to them, from a stick to a goat to a high-end play set form Playskool. And yes, all of them were equally happy.

Besides the few notable social differences that came up, the film’s only other redeeming quality was the stunning background scenery, especially in Mongolia and Africa. Incredible panoramic views help offset kids running around pantless.

    Watched on Netflix via on-demand.

  3. OK 2.5

Babies sitting on the ground and crying don’t really qualify as acting…..but then again, look at Lindsey Lohan.

  4. Male Stars OK 2.5
  5. Female Stars OK 2.5
  6. Female Costars OK 2.5
  7. Male Costars OK 2.5
  8. OK 2.5

I’m giving it “Good” for two reasons:

    1) Someone had the patience to sit there and film the kids.
    2) The background scenery was enticing.

  9. Direction Barely OK 2.0

There was no traditional direction. If I could select “N/A” I would.

  10. Play Good 3.0
  11. Music Bad 1.0

Some funky chanting and limited music.

  12. Visuals Good 3.0
  13. Content
  14. Tame 1.0
  15. Sex Innocent 1.0

Partial images of childbirth, African Moms feeding kids from the breasts, which are constantly exposed, and plenty of kids with no pants. None of these are “sexual” in nature, but you may want to be advised if thinking about watching it with younger kids.

  16. Violence Gentle 1.0
  17. Rudeness Polite 1.0
  18. Natural 1.0
  19. Circumstantial Natural 1.0
  20. Biological Natural 1.0
  21. Physical Natural 1.0
