1st The Shawshank Re...
1994 Perfect 93 Points

Ultimate male bonding, pungent dialogue, and charismatic performances make this a classic fairytale for grown men. Tim Robbins' steely, understated banker-behind-bars buddies up with Morgan Freeman's laconic, decent con to form a duo for the ages.

1st Forrest Gump
1994 Perfect 99 Points

America. My theory is that Forrest Gump serves as personification of the early baby boomers, i.e. of the America of that era. Naive, idealistic, rambunctious, Forrest's life functions as allegory for the cultural journey of the generation that came of age during the 60s.

Whether you buy that or not, this wonderfully charming movie – by turns funny and moving – showcases a classic Tom Hanks performance from his mid-90s heyday as The Biggest Movie Star In The World.

1st Saving Private Ryan
1998 Really Great 37 Points

Do war movies get any better than this? Puts you right there, in all the graphic realism that comes with war. But not just any war movie, this story spins a great tale that follows Hanks and his crew looking for and saving Ryan (Pitt). If you like war movies, this is a must-see.

1st Elizabeth
1998 Perfect 66 Points

Elizabeth is a smashingly good movie – presented with great aplomb – about worldshaping events, centered on arguably the greatest queen of all time. All that and the great Cate Blanchett's first ever motion picture role – for which she was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar.

Politically trenchant, the movie shows the savagery heaped upon Protestants by Catholics and on Catholics by Protestants during Christianity's 16th century.

1st The Green Mile
1999 Really Great 8 Points

Prison guards working on death row have to prepare for the upcoming execution of an inmate who has been convicted of the brutal slaying and rape of two little girls. The Green Mile, as the death row is known in this film, sees a variety of characters inhabit its cells, and patrols its hall. This movie goes beyond the complex debate of capital punishment, and delves into race relations, guilt, forgiveness, evil, and kindness, the ability to faith heal those who are hurting, without become too preachy.

Tom Hanks delivers a fine performance as the lead guard, charged with no only keeping …

1st National Treasure
2004 Very Good 66 Points

Cheerfully entertaining hokum, this professionally rendered popcorn movie reliably delivers charming and clever escapism. I'd avoided it for years, mostly due to Nic Cage wariness, but am quite happy to have now seen it, and wouldn't hesitate to watch it again if the occasion arose.

And yet, not to spoil any secrets, but "the sequel's":http://www.wikpik.com/movie_reviews/1234-national-treasure-the-book-of-secrets even better.

1st Ladder 49
2004 Really Great 4 Points

A great drama with tragic ending, where a fireman is trapped in an inferno building and has his last moments of past memory of how he became of what he is. Another film where I had another tear in m eye as Jack Morrison's friends and family lost a man of honor, pride and courage.

1st United 93
2006 Perfect 29 Points

United 93 takes place the day a tragedy occurred, September 11, 2001. It seems like a normal day to everyone. No one has any idea how big of an impact this day will have. At first everything goes as scheduled through the airlines. However, those who monitor the airplanes do become suspicious. They realize that there could be a possible hijacking situation on one of the planes. People are cautioned by this, but it is surprising to them since this hasn’t happened for 40 years. Soon they find out that several of the planes are in fact being hijacked. The workers try to do what they can to fi…

1st Pan's Labyrinth
2006 Really Great 93 Points

A brave girl's amazing fantasy, stupendously well told. Monumentally effective FX bring to life fauns, fairies and all manner of fantastical creatures, making Pan's Labyrinth both technically and artistically engrossing.

Faced with a horrific family situation, the brave Ofelia (played with plucky fortitude by then 12 year old Ivana Baquero) maintains her spirit by spending half the movie in a fantasy world where she is a princess of the underworld, called upon to conduct important missions of daring and courage. This allegorical counterpoint to the real-world calamities of the "Spanish…
