![]() A lavish Hitchcock treat, full of glamour, suspense and wit. The establishing scene is a virtuoso display of filmmaking all by itself, while Grace Kelly graces – there is no other word for it – the silver screen like a goddess amongst mortals. |
||||||
![]() Just as Goodfellas is the ne plus ultra of mob movies, Unforgiven is the apotheosis of Westerns. In classic Western form the movie endorses the ethos of the lone righteous man doing what needs done, while at the same time baldly debunking the glorification of gunfighters in the Wild West. Top Dog Western star Clint Eastwood commands the center of the movie on screen and behind the camera, painting Unforgiven as an elegy for his career in Westerns and for the genre itself. |

Gripping from start to finish, though the end is never in doubt. Stands as a testament to American heroism, ingenuity and bravura movie-making. Tom Hanks – in one of his iconic performances – heads a stellar cast atop their games. The screenplay introduced not one, but two catchphrases into the popular lexicon. |

![]() Is there a better crime movie? Other classics such as Godfather 2 equal Goodfellas, but none top it. If you like the genre and are not easily dismayed, this is the ne plus ultra. |
||||||
![]() Iron Man – a super knight for our ironic age – succeeds wildly because we relate to the oh-so-human hero while laughing at his non-stop comic patter. Marvel mastermind Stan Lee, stylish director Jon Favreau and witty star Robert Downey Jr. deserve hosannas for delivering such a smart and entertaining comik movie. Bring on the sequels! |
||||||
![]() Slumdog Millionaire couldn't be more of the moment if it was named President-elect Barack Obama: a Mumbai movie that delivers world class entertainment about a Muslim media sensation. The three kids at its center aren't religious or radical, though their profound victimization makes it easy to believe religious radicalization could thrive in their environment. It doesn't. SlumMill's basic proposition is as old as Hollywood: you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be on the edge of your seat – again, and again, and again. |

![]() As essential to understanding China as Gone with the Wind is to understanding America, The Warlords brims with operatic history, passion, blood and beauty. GWTW romanticized the 1861 American Civil War; This 21st Century Chinese production romanticizes the – a – Chinese Civil War, also from the 1860s. A big movie, The Warlords won "8 Hong Kong Film Awards":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warlords#27th_Hong_Kong_Film_Awards a couple of years ago, including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Costume & Makeup Design, Art Direction, Visual Effects, and Best Actor – Jet Li. ![]() Finally, a USA friendly Iraq War movie, the novelty of which shows how far Hollywood has drifted from objective reality and obvious movie subjects. Wonder of wonders, a show of fellow Americans resolutely and professionally pursuing their liberation mission offers a tremendous adrenaline rush, a flush of patriotic pride and more than a little empathetic emotional resonance. Thank goodness Hollywood finally stumbled upon this verity. The air musta cleared in L.A. Or something. Don't mistake this great Kathryn Bigelow movie for cinéma vérité however. In particular, Jeremy Renner's Sgt… |

Heroism and bravery have a new name, and that name is Ree. Just 17 years old, Ree's as brave and heroic as any movie hero ever. Played by stellar newcomer Jennifer Lawrence, her quest – Winter's Bone being a quest movie – is so virtuous and she's so intrepid, so true, that you know she's bound to deliver a happy ending. You just don't know how it’s going to play out. Set in the "methamphetamine culture" of today's Ozarks, Winter's Bone follows young Ree as she seeks out her meth-cooking Daddy so she can avoid the bail bondsman from taking their house, in the process throwing her, … |
