Three Kings
Very Good 83 Points 1999

Three Kings succeeds magnificently as cockeyed caper movie, less so as metaphor for America’s abortive involvement in Iraq following the Persian Gulf War. The former unspools propulsively as George Clooney’s disgruntled commando leads a ragtag crew on a crazy hunt for Saddam Hussein’s gold. T…

The Last Samurai
Very Good 83 Points 2003

Well produced Tom Cruise historical epic, appealing to those of us who like such entertainments. As he so often does, Cruise plays a character at once naive and smug, who reveals an admirable steeliness by the third reel.

Troy
Very Good 17 Points 2004

Its not often you get to see a mainstream actor in a mythic/period piece such as this, and Brad “I will look down upon your corpse and smile” Pitt doesn’t disappoint as the invulnerable Achillies. How cool is watching him take down worthy opponents with deft jumps and swift swings of his sword? …

Blood Diamond
Very Good 66 Points 2006

Terrific movie that works primarily as a classic Hollywood action drama, yet also delivers a lesson about recent evil in the real world. Thankfully, the preaching rarely supersedes the story, making this a message movie that keeps its priorities straight: entertain us and the message will be eas…

The Army of Crime
Very Good 71 Points 2009

Turns out the French Resistance wasn’t entirely French, with the Nazis dubbing one largely foreign group The Army of Crime. More legitimately known as the Manouchian Group, they were spectacularly effective in metro Paris during 1943, a feat inadvertently highlighted by the Nazi propaganda pos…

Heartbreak Ridge
Very Good 17 Points 1986

Classic Clint Eastwood in a newer war movie. Old rough-neck Clint deals with his aging demons, cleans up some misfits, and shows us what marines are supposed to do. This film was a little campy at times, but Clint carries it through.

Gettysburg
Very Good 83 Points 1993

The Civil War’s decisive battle can get extensively aired over nearly 4½ hours, and does in Gettysburg. The real battle lasted three days in July of 1863, say 36 hours actually fighting. The movie covers fully an eighth of that. Stamina is required, a long plane ride ideal.

Consider it a …

Gardens of Stone
Very Good 17 Points 1987

Gardens distinguishes itself by delivering a no-nonsense view of Vietnam from the eyes of soldiers dealing with the situation back home. On the surface, the outcomes are predictable, but the journey that this film takes you on was not. Instead, this film produces world class drama and a unique p…
