Heartbreak Ridge
Very Good 17 Points 1986

Classic Clint Eastwood in a newer war movie. Old rough-neck Clint deals with his aging demons, cleans up some misfits, and shows us what marines are supposed to do. This film was a little campy at times, but Clint carries it through.

Hamburger Hill
Very Good 17 Points 1987

What makes Hamburger Hill worth watching is that it differentiates itself from the overly produced war movies like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket and just tells the story of one of the more infamous battles of Vietnam in a straight-up fashion. Just a group of Infantry trying to survive from…

Perfect 95 Points 1987

Goodbye Children – the final words of a heroic priest as he’s led away by a Jew-hunting Gestapo agent – forms a fitting title for this beautifully realized recounting of writer-director Louis Malle’s childhood experience during the Nazi occupation of France. Au Revoir les Enfants – _Goodbye …

Old fashioned and reverential, Glory shines in its rendering of an important bit of American history, its vivid recreation of several Civil War battles, and via Denzel Washington’s Oscar-winning performance.

The important history recounts how the first African-American regiment….

A neo-classic military oriented thriller with some great twists and turns (literally, and in the plot). If you are a Connery fan — you won’t be dissappointed.

Memphis Belle
OK 17 Points 1990

A movie that follows the crew of the Memphis Belle — a WWII bomber smack in the middle of the risky allied daytime raids over Germany. There is nothing terribly special about the acting, but nothing terribly bad either. Just ‘Ok’. The story was intriguing — the movie focuses on the events le…

Good 17 Points 1991

Has glorifying insubordination gone out of style? If so, watch Flight of the Intruder for some gold old ‘disobey orders for a worthy cause’ nostalgia. The plot is pretty much a joke and tries too hard to be a Carrier borne top gun. That said, if you are like me and enjoy anything that has stres…
