Invincible
Great 83 Points 2006

Invincible is a great football movie, tough yet sensitive in a manly sort of way. Relationships between fathers and sons and buddies and girls-who-wear-jerseys are all well mined for emotional wallop.

The movie has added resonance for those of us familiar with Philly and the 70s, especially…

Rocky Balboa
Very Good 71 Points 2006

Amazingly, this is the first Rocky I’ve ever sat through, even though R1 came out when I was in high school. This is certainly a grand valedictory for Sly’s seminal character.

We Are Marshall
Really Great 66 Points 2006

Arguably the best football movie ever, We Are Marshall is about much more than sports. Don’t shy away because 75 people – including dozens of collegiate football players – died in the horrific plane crash that forms its centerpiece. The movie is about what led up to the tragedy and mostly abo…

Gracie
Barely OK 17 Points 2007

An overly formulaic yarn about the girl who won’t be let in to the all-boy soccer scene during the 70’s. To me, the best thing about this movie was the 70’s rock sound bites. The actors are not very memorable, but the flick will be enjoyed by tweener kids.

The Final Season
Good 66 Points 2007

This true story plays out like a lesser “Hoosiers”, albeit set in “Field of Dreams” Iowa baseball territory. Strong performances by Sean Astin, Rachel Leigh Cook, and especially Powers Boothe elevate the movie above Movie-of-the-Week fare.

The King of Kong
Good 17 Points 2007

While not a great movie, the fun-poking at geeky 70’s arcade game players was hard to resist. Lots of chuckles at characters that probably existed when you and your acne was playing Pac Man or Donkey Kong at the arcade. Even more funny is the look at the ultra-geeks who get sucked back in when t…

Leatherheads
Good 17 Points 2008

I was excited to see a movie about Football’s early years, a time when professional football wasn’t taken seriously, and many teams were in danger of failing. Slapstick ruled the day, fights ended up in closer friendships, Clooney uses the period as a significant source of the comedy, and Randy N…
