OK 2.5
It’s a stupid movie. If you don’t expect more than that, then you might enjoy it.
Oooh. Well, this movie was rough for more than one reason. Expectations weren’t set too high going in, as with most present-day Adam Sandler flicks; however, I must admit that I was interested to see the interaction between Sandler and Andy Samberg as father and son, as I find subtle similarities between the two actors in terms of style.
The humor throughout was stupid and immature, which was to be expected, with some very funny parts that you couldn’t help but laugh out loud at. I was pleased to see many familiar faces make cameos throughout the film… If you’ve seen most Sandler movies, you know who I’m talking about – the handful of actors that are famous for appearing in nearly all of Sandler’s movies return once again.
This movie had one tragic error which annoyed me probably more than it should have: The plot was cliche, overly used, and completely predictable. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the same story portrayed in over 10 different movies and TV shows, but it’s all the same story in the end. One character engages in some sort of social relationship with another character, whether it be a friendship, romantic relationship, etc, and originally has mal intentions. In the case of That’s My Boy, Sandler attempts to rekindle his relationship with his son in order to use him for financial gain. Then, as the characters begin to grow closer, genuine feelings develop, and the original character begins to feel guilty and decides to bail on his original plan. However, it’s too late at that point, because his counterpart has just discovered his original plan, feels deceived and used, and wants nothing to do with the character anymore, even though now he or she wants nothing more than to have a genuine relationship with the other character. And then, of course, in true Hollywood style, the movie ends happily, with the two characters making up, and living their lives happily ever after.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? It’s the story of the guy who initiates a bet with his best friend to see who can sleep with more girls in a week, and starts collecting tallies when suddenly he begins to fall for one of the girls. Just as he’s ready to pursue a genuine relationship, the girl finds out about his initial bet, feels used, and wants nothing to do with him. But then they somehow later get married…
This theme is commonly used in film and TV, and in my humble opinion, is over-used.
Overall, not terrible for this kind of movie. Adam Sandler movies that try to be serious have the potential to bomb hard like Click… this is not the case. If you know what you’re going into, you may find some enjoyment in the inappropriate content and situational comedy that ensues. Not a bad $1 spent at the Redbox machine, but not quite worth the price of admission.

Not even sure why Rex Ryan was in this movie. I think Sandler is a Jets’ fan… but unnecessary.
