BigdaddyDave's Review

  1. Quality
  2. Perfect 5.0

A delightful fairy-tale type movie about Edward (Johnny Depp), a young man “created” by a brilliant scientist (Vincent Price), who dies before he can give Edward hands. As a result, Edward must use over-sized scissors as appendages, leading to social awkwardness, and plenty of comedic material.

The movie succeeds because of Depp’s great acting, the creative focus and energy of a talented Tim Burton, and the comic-book visual imagery that reminds us not to take the film so seriously. In reality, it is a magical tale, woven into a fine tapestry of imagery, social commentary, and laughter.

A rare film that appeals to a wide variety of movie fans, making for great entertainment for the whole family.

  3. Great 4.0
  4. Male Stars Perfect 5.0

Depp is exceptional in his role, weaving his charaters imagery and mannerisms in a wonderful blend of man-child and monster.

  5. Female Stars Great 4.0

Dianne West does and admirable job as the overcaring mother who wants to help Edward. Her syrupy sweetness fits well in this sweet tale of acceptance.

Winona Ryder brings a gentleness as the love- interest of Edward. Solid performance indeed.

  6. Female Costars Good 3.0

A bevy of character actors play the local gossip group. More visually delightful than thespian powerhouses, but play an integral role as walking fashion creations from Edward.

  7. Male Costars OK 2.5

Anthony Michael Hall plays the rude and annoying macho role, as he tries to bully Edward around. Quite a differenct role from his Farmer character in 16 Candles, where HE was the one getting bullied. Sadly, it also showed his limited acting ability, having lost the vulnerable likeability that endeared him to John Hughes fans.

  8. Really Great 4.5
  9. Direction Perfect 5.0

Burton spins a wonderful tale, full of surprises and beautiful imagery.

  10. Play Great 4.0
  11. Music Perfect 5.0

The great Danny Elfman continued his brilliant run of musical scores with this effort.

  12. Visuals Perfect 5.0

Wonderful colors and imagery make this a fairy tale that is captivating.

  13. Content
  14. Risqué 1.6
  15. Sex Innocent 1.5
  16. Violence Fierce 1.6
  17. Rudeness Salty 1.7
  18. Surreal 3.0
  19. Circumstantial Surreal 2.7
  20. Biological Supernatural 3.1
  21. Physical Supernatural 3.2

Regarding Wick’s Review
Thanks MJ. I don’t know if Burton’s sold out or not. He’s always done super big budget movies, just that very few turned out as perfectly as this one, which came at the end of a remarkable three year run. He did Batman the year before Sissorhands and Beetle Juice the year before that. We’re talking one hell of a streak!

Brings to mind the Stones from ’68 to ’72: Beggars Banquet followed by Let It Bleed and then Sticky Fingers and finally Exile on Main St.

Nobody maintains that pace for long.

Regarding Wick’s Review
Excellent review, Wick. A well deserved perfect, as well. Films like this and “Ed Wood” truely echo a time in which Tim Burton was a very talented filmmaker. Its a shame he doesn’t make original films like this and instead sells out and keeps coming out with remake after remake. I always enjoy watching this one so it can still give me a concept of a time where Burton was a real visionary.
