  1. Quality
  2. Great 4.0

Set in the vast coldness of the Antarctic, a remote outpost of scientists comes under attack from a mysterious predator that can mutate into different life forms. Isolated from the world, they must discover how the THING survives, and more importantly, how to kill it.

The special effects are amazing in this film, especially since it’s from 1982. But the real horror in this film is not knowing who is an alien, and who isn’t. As most masters of horror will tell you, it’s what we can’t see that scares us the most. And in the case of The Thing, that mystery is heightened by the remote desolation of the outpost, and a similar outpost found early in the film, where the inhabitants had suffered some grisly and mysterious deaths.

Great movie to watch, even today.

  3. Good 3.0
  4. Male Stars Very Good 3.5

Kurt Russell stars as MacCready, the leader of the outpost, who tries to outwith the attacks. Strong performance from a verastile actor.

  5. Female Stars Good 3.0

    None

  6. Female Costars Good 3.0

    None

  7. Male Costars Good 3.0

Several big name actors inhabit the post, incuding a younger Wilfred Brimley, who is delightful in his role.

  8. Good 3.0
  9. Direction Very Good 3.5

John Carpenter has made a great remake of an original horror classic that now stands the tests of time.

  10. Play Good 3.0
  11. Music Good 3.0

An underappreciated score helps build the dramatic tension in this film.

  12. Visuals Very Good 3.5

    Great special effects!

  13. Content
  14. Risqué 2.2
  15. Sex Innocent 1.0

    No sex or nudity.

  16. Violence Brutal 2.8

The parts where people are attacked can be intense. This movie is NOT for children, especially younger ones.

  17. Rudeness Profane 2.9

Mature language is present in this film.

  18. Fantasy 5.0

I have to rate the following categories high, as it involves aliens mutating into ourselves.

  19. Circumstantial Fantasy 5.0
  20. Biological Fantasy 5.0
  21. Physical Fantasy 4.9

Regarding Wick’s Review
Now in two weeks we see if the new Thing can hang with the real Thing.
