Hear it from a brand new roller derby fan: Whip It rocks! This fun, light spirited, funny feel-good movie isn’t cheesy at all, and uses traditional drama infused with big doses of smile-invoking scenes and generous LOL moments to create an all-around crowd pleaser.

Ellen Page carries the show as the 17 year-old alternative gal who discovers her true calling. Loved Marcia Harden is my other pick as Bliss’ mom Brooke, followed by a memorable performance by Juliette Lewis as ‘Iron Maven’.

Drew Barrymore’s debut directorship shines, and the film smoothly infuses all the classic elements of a great flick. A surprise hit with me was the soundtrack.
