Good 3.0
Schizophrenia meets Narcissism. Ok, maybe not that dramatic, but The Soloist is a wonderful movie for those interested in interesting characters. Steve Lopez’ (Robert Downey Jr) pursuit of the next best story leads him almost accidentally to the rare find of Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx). The relationship between them, but perhaps more specifically the depths of Nathaniel is what this movie is all about. I felt the story was kind of meandering, but understanding what makes the schizophrenic musician “tick†made for an interesting story. Plus, Jamie Foxx makes you forget that he’s an actor — which was a real treat.

Very Good 3.5
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: Robert Downey Jr. – no matter the role – always seems to come across as ‘himself’. Lucky for him that his natural self works well in this movie as it does his others: the hapless self-centered viewpoint and the not so subtle sarcasm. His best talent must be for finding those movies that work really well for who he already is. And Jamie Foxx? What can I say? Simply great acting. Also enjoyed Catherine Keener as Mary Weston. How come we don’t see more of her?

Good 3.0
A great story, great acting, and a great use of sound and imagery results in a good film. My only complaint is that the film wanders a bit and some moments seem contrived. All in all, Joseph Wright deserves kudos for putting together Lopez’ book to film.

Regarding BrianSez’s Review Interesting that this is one of the rare movies you rated higher than me. You’re usually the tougher grader. Looking for more Katherine Keener? She’s the first character on screen in Cyrus. |
