The Stoned Horror Critic's Review

Created Dec 28, 2008 09:42PM PST • Edited Apr 15, 2010 04:30PM PST

  1. Quality
  2. Perfect 5.0

This movie is easily the best movie I have seen in a LONG time. After I saw Batman Begins in 2005 and learned that the Joker was going to be the next villian, I was thrilled. Though I was never a HUGE Joker fan (I personally preferred Scarecrow in the show and comics), there was something about the ending that told me that this new Joker was going to be different. Then, in winter 2008, when I heard that Heath Ledger was going to play the Joker, I knew it would be legendary. Heath was easily my favourite actor from this decade, and it saddens me that he will never be on the big screen again. Still, the Imginarium of Doctor Parnassus will be coming out in a couple months, so we can still see him one more time. So, I saw the Dark Knight the week it came out, and it completely blew me away. I had never seen an acting performance quite like Ledger’s since I saw Anthony Hopkins portray Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Now, if you told me a year ago that one of the best movies of the 2000s would be a Batman movie, I would say, “What are you smoking, and why am I not smoking it??”
But now, I would completely agree with you.

  3. Perfect 5.0

This movie has some of the best acting I’ve seen this entire decade. Heath Ledger was amzing as the Joker, Aaron Eckhart was great as Harvey Dent, not to mention Gary Oldman, Micheal Caine, and Morgan Freeman. Plus, Christian Bale was great as Batman. I have to say, my two favourite Batmans are Micheal Keaton and Christian Bale. And even though I think Keaton is still by far the best Batman, Bale gives a stellar performance in the Dark Knight.

  4. Male Stars Perfect 5.0

Heath Ledger, again, gives his best acting performance since Brokeback Mountain. It saddens me that he wasn’t really noticed until after he died.

Christian Bale was great as Batman, but he needs to do a better voice

  5. Female Stars Perfect 5.0

Maggie Gyllenhaal is as talented as her brother Jake. I actually liked her slightly better than the chick from Batman Begins.

  6. Female Costars Perfect 5.0
  7. Male Costars Perfect 5.0
  8. Perfect 5.0

Best quality film I’ve seen in ages. Very top notch.

  9. Direction Perfect 5.0

Christopher Nolan really knew what he was doing when he directed this baby.

  10. Play Perfect 5.0

Some of the most interesting dialogue I’ve heard in a long time.

  11. Music Perfect 5.0

The score for this movie was expertly done.

  12. Visuals Perfect 5.0

The only thing they get wrong in this movie is the hands. The scene where Batman is interrogating the Joker and he has him pinned against the wall is the most obviouse (great scene, though). When the camera’s on the Joker, his hand is holding Batman’s arm so that the back of his hand is toward Batman. When the camera is on Batman, the Joker’s hand is holding Batman’s arm so that the back of his hand is facing himself. It’s kind of subtle, though. I didn’t notice it untill I was watching it for the 6th time with my friend James and he pointed it out. Other than that the visuals are great.

  13. Content
  14. Sordid 2.6

This is certainly the darkest and most violent Batman movie ever made. There are a hell of alot of explosions, guns, and a huge body count. People are getting jacked in this movie. The only thing absent is blood. If they just added blood to this movie, it would be an easy R.

Not much sex at all. There’s some innuendo in the scene at Wayne’s penthouse, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s tits bounce up and down when she walks, but that’s it.

Rudeness? Well, the Joker kills alot of people, iincluding important political figures, cops, and Batman copycats. But that’s really it.

  15. Sex Titillating 1.7
  16. Violence Brutal 2.6
  17. Rudeness Profane 2.6
  18. Surreal 2.7

Though the aspect of Batman isn’t very realistic, the Joker is more realistic than any of the other Jokers. If there was a real villian named the Joker, he would probabely be a psychopathic murderer instead of a smart ass who dresses like a clown and cracks jokes. And if he DID dress like a clown, the makeup job would be alot more like Leger’s, messy and unkempt, with really greesey hair. Jack Nicholson’s Joker, though very good, looked like he took showers regularly and spent 2-3 hours perfecting his makeup.

  19. Circumstantial Surreal 2.7
  20. Biological Surreal 2.7
  21. Physical Surreal 2.7

Ah, how could I forget. There were just too many good movies out that year.

Wick

Agreed. Let’s not forget Iron Man, also from 2008.

I gotta say, Wick, as far as movies go, I’d say 2008 was the best year for movies since 1994 and movies such as “The Dark Knight”, “Slumdog Millionaire”, “The Wrestler”, and “Milk” prove my point.
