Really Great 4.5
When you think of M. Night Shayamalan many things come to mind- unknowing fear, unbearable silences, and nothing is what it seems. As with all his movies you are looking everywhere for some possible answer to the questions that he puts to his audience. This was no different. I felt I was watching an old Hitchcock film, the genre updated for this century. While it is an R rated movie I think it is one of the most intellectually active ones I have seen in a long time. There is no possibility in divulging anything from the movie, but I will say that the two women on the park bench is at the start of the movie and you are on the ride from then on out till the end.

This movie is character driven, all the actors have a huge responsibility to uphold.

Male Stars Great 4.0
Mark Wahlberg as Elliot Moore, a calm, cool, peaceful man was something different in all respects to him and his acting skills. At first I felt quite uncomfortable with the way his character was, but I will say that he had an affect on me that I had never had while watching him up on the screen, he a force of nature that was strong and resilient.

Female Stars Great 4.0
Zooey Deschanel, was a beautiful pick for the role of Alma Moore, a very timid woman who while saying she doesn’t like to show emotions publicly, wears her heart on her sleeve.

Ashlyn Sanchez plays Jess, a little girl of few words but an old soul for sure.

Male Costars Great 4.0
John Leguizamo is Julian, Jess’ father, and also friend and protector of those he loves.

Very Good 3.5
As with most Shayamalan movies simplicity wins out everytime. Less is more. As stated above the quality of the movie was as if it was made with Alfred Hitchcock sitting beside M. Night Shayamalan as co-director.

For the life of me, I always had my imagination as a strong armor against anything that came at me. I may be the most gullible person on the planet, but I think the movie was intelligent in the fact that it wasn’t like most where you have all the special effects, buckets of blood, and some indelible monster chasing after everyone. It had this eerily calm tone as if to say I am going to take away the part of the movie that usually lets you feel safe, when everyone is there and reserved and talking to one another. The whole movie made me feel as if I was in a separate room and all the info was being heard almost out of earshot. (I don’t know if I am making sense, sorry if I just get too involved in movies) |
