The Searchers
Very Good 66 Points 1956

The greatest Western ever? Not in my judgment. Though a darn good movie, The Searchers is too phony to make a claim for all-time honors. While dated, it remains essential viewing for Western fans, full of jaw dropping scenery, intriguing interplay, and classic cowboys and Indians horse chases.

Giant
Great 66 Points 1956

A deserved classic, this aptly titled movie features giant stars, a ginormous mansion incongruously stuck in the heart of the giant state of Texas, a running time that exceeds three hours and giant story elements. It all works amazingly well, never seeming drawn-out or boring, notwithstanding a …

Rio Bravo
Great 79 Points 1959

Terrific Western: Howard Hawks behind the camera, John Wayne in front. Also the movie in which Dean Martin proved he could act, even if he was playing his typecast role of drunkard.

Hud
Very Good 66 Points 1963

Paul Newman wanted to be bad and got his wish with Hud. He plays a charismatic asshole, a user and abuser whose evil becomes increasingly evident as the movie rolls along. Three Oscars came in its wake, though King Cool himself had to be satisfied with just a nomination. Think Hud would’ve s…

Bonnie and Clyde
Very Good 66 Points 1967

Legendary movie about legendary bank robbers fails to live up to its legend. Over-the-top performances and violence that is far from the current cutting-edge make Bonnie and Clyde somewhat of a museum piece. That said, with star power and style points to spare, the movie is worth watching for…

North Dallas Forty
Very Good 66 Points 1979

Perhaps a movie past its time – when the Dallas Cowboys were TV America’s Team – but a rousing and funny movie nonetheless. Notable for a classic Nick Nolte man’s man performance, football action that for the first time seemed real, and a whiff of the larger changes going in 1970’s society outsi…

Lonesome Dove
Really Great 17 Points 1989

This epic TV miniseries follows ex Texas Rangers (Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones) as they steal horses in Mexico then get involved in a cattle drive to Montana in the 1880’s. A little Kitschy at times, but endearing to watch the pair banter back and forth and perform their manly cowboy roles. …

Dazed and Confused
Great 83 Points 1993

An all-time great high school movie, Dazed and Confused captures a moment when kids got away with hedonism adults didn’t yet comprehend. Rarely LOL, though pleasantly funny – when not indulging in mild sadism – its blissful callowness is altogether winning, especially as brought to life by a g…
