Minority Report
Good 66 Points 2002

Just a decade old, Minority Report hasn’t aged well. Perhaps because it’s based on a short story from the Fifties?

Some of its vaunted futuristic technologies now seem ridiculous. To wit, newspapers with live displays are delivered daily to the front lawn. Why?

Reality factor quibbling…

Hondo
Good 66 Points 1953

John Wayne starring in an Old West fairytale based on a Louis L’Amour story endows Hondo with loads of old fashioned panache, yet saddles it with too many cliches for enduring greatness. That’s in 2D however. Having seen it years ago in 3D, I recall it as being better but still not great.

It…

Good 18 Points 2013

This felt like a made-for-cable travel show, except it was with a daydreaming host Adam Sandler. Although very disjoint, the imagery and surrealism of the situations keep you interested in what is coming next. That , along with surprisingly like able characters and a understated but heart felt l…

Nothing Sacred
Very Good 66 Points 1937

Considered one of the great screwball comedies, Nothing Sacred is still worth viewing some eighty years after its premier for the satirical laughs it triggers, for its colorful portrayal of New York City and rural Vermont, and for its clever takedown of venal journalism as practiced by big city…

The Drop
Very Good 66 Points 2014

Dennis Lehane took a short-story set in his characteristic Boston and expanded it into a screenplay set in Brooklyn. This works, great writer that he is, even if the story’s legs don’t so much cohere as cohabitate.

The Drop won’t cohabitate as among his best with Mystic River

Rio Bravo
Great 79 Points 1959

Terrific Western: Howard Hawks behind the camera, John Wayne in front. Also the movie in which Dean Martin proved he could act, even if he was playing his typecast role of drunkard.

Memento
Great 119 Points 2000

Deserving of its wide acclaim, Memento nonetheless remains a bit of an aficionados’ treat. The central conceit of the story – the ‘condition’ that restricts Guy Pierce’s Leonard from forming new memories – drags on the dialogue and doesn’t allow the story to gain momentum. Still this movie is…

Joe Kidd
Great 66 Points 1972

The great Elmore Leonard wrote two kinds of scripts, great ones and, well, er, the great Elmore Leonard wrote one kind of script, not counting the two genres he wrote: Westerns and darkly funny crime dramas. Known more now for the latter, he was a modern master of the former, populating his hair…
