Terror on the P...
Great 66 Points 2022

Revisionist Westerns pack a punch, especially when shorn of everything non-elemental. Terror on the Prairie packs one hell of a punch, simultaneously elemental (Gina Carano plays a totally traditional wife and mother.) and revisionist (She’s also an ultra badass.). Plus, she’s smarter than the …

A Fistful of Do...
Great 7 Points 1964

The Spaghetti Western trilogy begins with a ruthless and intricate film in “Dollars”. Clint Eastwood shows even in his first film performance that he was destined to own the Western genre, and Leone’s hallmarks (starkly beautiful vistas, memorable Morricone score) are all present. A fantastic d…

Blazing Saddles
Really Great 7 Points 1974

This is one seriously funny film, and still liable to shock and amuse in equal measure. The racist angle is well handled, and the spoofs, non-sequieteurs and general surrealism of “Blazing Saddles” make it as unmissable as a comedy classic should be.

Lonesome Dove
Really Great 17 Points 1989

This epic TV miniseries follows ex Texas Rangers (Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones) as they steal horses in Mexico then get involved in a cattle drive to Montana in the 1880’s. A little Kitschy at times, but endearing to watch the pair banter back and forth and perform their manly cowboy roles. …

The Revenant
Really Great 17 Points 2015

Gritty, dirty, muddy, bloody, cold, miserable… just some of the words you can use to describe trapper life in the 1800’s. Leonardo DeCaprio does a stellar job representing the will to survive surrounded by a standout cast of Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter. You’ll definitely ge…

Django Unchained
Really Great 95 Points 2012

Django Unchained is an absurdly good movie that goes where few filmmakers dare tread, and succeeds so completely that only Tarantino could pull it off. What he’s pulled off is a Tarantinic take on the first of the two racial decimations to occur in the heart of Western Civilization, three year…
