Barely OK 2.0
Well intentioned flop: the comedy never inspires laughs and the drama never hits home. Nonetheless, the great concept – oddball father drags practical daughter on a real treasure hunt through modern day suburbia – and the likable performances by Evan Rachel Wood and Michael Douglas make this watchable.

Good 3.0
It falls to Michael Douglas – playing a bipolar iconoclast – to generate the laughs. He fails.
Evan Rachel Wood, as the teen aged daughter he leaves to fend for herself, delivers a competent though non-engaging performance.

Barely OK 2.0
Great concept poorly executed: embark on a treasure hunt for Spanish gold, navigating through the Applebees, Costcos, McDonalds, golf courses and subdivisions of modern California. This contrived and soulless landscape should provide an ironic backdrop for the deeper truths that emerge for the daughter of an unbalanced father. Too bad it doesn’t.
