Very Good 3.5
Ang Lee mixes impactful flashbacks and the surreal present of Billy Lynn and his squad’s PR tour back home. The movie’s message points out the disingenuousness of the average American’s feigned support of our fighting men and women, which is why I loved Ang’s use of the flashback to snap us all back to the reality of what war does to these kids. My favorite moment of the movie is a cameo by Richard Sherman and JJ What who ask “what’s it feel like to kill somebody?”. Answer from Billy: “what’s it like to take someone down?” Sherman and JJ produce a wry smile. I also enjoyed Steve Martin in the Cowboys owners role.
