Very Good 3.5
Oliver Stone’s Snowden indeed tells a left of center viewpoint of the actions leading to his exile to Russia. The CIA is represented as having lots of super cool technology and bright youngsters hacking together sophisticated systems that perhaps do too much. There were controversial depictions of overreach and a corrupt underbelly of the organization – especially at the political top. Regarding the issue that was most important to me, whether or not Snowden was correct to blow the whistle publicly? Well, the movie presents it as a logical thing to do given how they portrayed the leaders, but to me that was unconvincing. Putting the politics and legalities aside, how was Snowden for its pure entertainment value? I’m pegging it at great, because the stress was palpable and the action and dialog top notch.
