   I’m on a roll with watching ‘B War Movies’ recently, so in that spirit I took a gander at Fortress. Fortress is a bit of a stretch. It seems to me that B17s were largely sitting ducks between the flack from below and the fly-by strafing from above. Numbers was the key to success, the more B17s you had, the better your chances that a few make it through to hit their targets. The film wasn’t bad at conveying the life of pilots over Sicily in 1943, but fails miserably at really letting us get to know the characters and the theme of of the film, which was supposed to be about the new pilot getting along with the gritty veteran crew.
