Really Great 4.5
Lava is love, Hawaiian Island style, delivered in seven minutes of sweet love song and volcanic activity. The dramatic contrast works wonderfully well: the violent and the accepting, the unyielding and the hopeful. Pixar should release this short separately after it’s done opening for the great Inside Out.

Perfect 5.0
James Ford Murphy, the head of animation at Pixar Animation Studios, wrote and directed Lava, though no writing credit is listed at IMDb. Perhaps that’s because there is no dialog other than the song Lava, written by Kuana Torres Kahele and performed by him & Napua Makua, as the female volcano.
