  1. Quality
  2. Very Good 3.5

Chappie brings us a kindler, gentler Robocop. A robot with a child’s developing AI brain; Ears that rotate up and down like a Dog when interested or curious; A robot who doesn’t know his own strength. The movie is a new addition to the many “robot with friendly personality” movies (think R2D2, Transformers, Johnny-5 in Short Circuit, and even the butler or maid in the Jetsons). The story is a little quirky – what with its South African setting and its uniquely scuzzball heroes and a brilliantly weird casting of Hugh Jackman as a bad guy and Sigourney Weaver as a self serving and largely clueless CEO of a weapons company (she’s no Robert Downey Jr. – lets put it that way), and finally the Indian-Geek “maker” Dev Patel. When all is said and done, the combo works well and the Disney-like ending to the largely R-rated content sends you out with a smile.

  3. Great 4.0

Other than the mentions above, Sharlto Copely gives great personality to the machine. He’s South Afrikan – did they pick the setting because of his accent?
