OK 2.5
Ridley Scott’s big budget film about the famous Christopher Columbus was entertaining, but not as gripping as you’d expect from the 40M investment. The scenes, costumes, etc. were all very well done – but the movie suffers from being overly dramatic and one grows weary after an hour or so. Also, although I like Gerard Depardieu, listening to his thick French accent becomes quite the annoyance among what are supposed to be Spaniards. The film redeems itself a bit via the use of Amand Assante as the scheming Sanchez and Sigourney Weaver as Queen Isabel. Isabel’s generosity and soft spot for Columbus is featured toward the end: letting him live out his disappointing life in freedom – even after botching his conquest. Little consolation however after he learns that Aerigo Vespucci was the first to get to the mainland. Sigh.
