  1. Quality
  2. Really Great 4.5

Peter Jackson redeems himself from a less than Really-Great Desolation of Smaug. We return to the beginning, and the basics of Hobbits, Elves, Dwarfs, Orcs, Men, and Wizards. Five players in the comfortable story of good vs. bad. But the bad was much simpler: we’re talking dragons and orcs. Not bad for a rallyiing cry. Without the Lord of the Rings movies before this, we may not have picked up on the subtleties and meaning of the ring, and the wizard antics – but it hardly mattered since this film was all about the big fight and return to greatness. Simple, straight-forward, and really great entertainment. One of my goals in the upcoming years is to re-watch all of these in story-chronological order. I’m going to really enjoy that.
