Wick's Review

  1. Quality
  2. Very Good 3.5

A cheated wife gets her revenge in The Other Woman by stealing the movie from “the other woman”. That would be Leslie Mann stealing from Cameron Diaz, the big star and a natural as the other woman. Mann is hilarious as a kookie wife who gets not just the last laugh, but most every other one as well.

Fortunately the chuckles are fairly frequent, with several flat out LOL, making The Other Woman a crowd pleasing comedy that’s a little raunchy and more than a little funny. That might not make it The One, but surely makes it worth a fling.

  3. Great 4.0

Cameron Diaz dominates the marketing of The Other Woman, and is well cast as a high powered lawyer who still attracts men like flies. However, she is sometimes more frantic than funny. Fortunately she gets to play the straight-man role most of the time to Leslie Mann.

Leslie Mann so often plays the straight-man, especially in husband Judd Apatow’s comedies, that she’s a bit of a revelation as a first rate comedienne herself. She ably spans the gamut from ditzy to endearing to crafty, all the while delivering one funny scene after another with pitch perfect tone and timing. Yo Judd, rethink how you use her, OK.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a natural as her swordsman of a husband. We knew he could be dangerously handsome from movies like Headhunters. However, he also proves surprisingly good in his physical comedy scenes, such as when he has a “fecal incident” in a fancy restaurant.

Kate Upton doesn’t embarrass herself as another girlfriend, delivering several lines competently. Plus she looks great in her bikini scenes. However, her career seems set to remain model/actress, not the reverse.

Nicki Minaj, OTOH, conveys deadpan charisma to go with her eye popping physical charms and huge fan base. She could turn into a real actress. Watch out world.

Don Johnson appears briefly and unimpressively. Taylor Kinney, OTOH, brings understated charisma to his small role, making him seem destined for greater things.

  4. Male Stars Great 4.0
  5. Female Stars Really Great 4.5
  6. Female Costars Good 3.0
  7. Male Costars Good 3.0
  8. Very Good 3.5

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, let alone three of them, making the mistress-wife buddy concept of The Other Woman a natural for revenge comedy. Its BFF vibe apparently comes naturally, as it was written by a woman. One senses that rookie Melissa Stack is going to get more opportunities to shine.

Director Nick Cassavetes isn’t known for comedy, but proves a fairly deft hand at the hardest of genres. Even his physical comedy scenes work.

  9. Direction Very Good 3.5
  10. Play Very Good 3.5
  11. Music Very Good 3.5
  12. Visuals Very Good 3.5
  13. Content
  14. Risqué 2.4

Adultery 101, and 201, and 301, 401 and a graduate level course get essayed in the movie. It all stays PG-13 however, notwithstanding that The Other Woman is wildly inappropriate for younger teens.

  15. Sex Titillating 2.5
  16. Violence Fierce 1.9
  17. Rudeness Profane 2.7
  18. Surreal 2.2
  19. Circumstantial Surreal 2.1
  20. Biological Surreal 3.0
  21. Physical Glib 1.6
