Great 4.0
Peter Jackson continues his successful screen rendition of Tolkien’s masterpieces with the Hobbit, a prequel to the Lord of the Rings films. For this go-round, Peter chose to break up Tolkein’s Hobbit in to three parts, which more or less align with the major sections of the book – and An Unexpected Journey kicks it all off. I read the Hobbit, and it wasn’t all that big of a book compared to its LOR bretheren – and indeed Peter’s film seems to drag things out a bit – especially the prologue to Bilbo’s famous trip. That said, the film was a really great telling of the tale. The action and the excellent renditions of Trolls, Goblins, and Orcs as well as the fantastic scenery, mystical Elvish homesteads and majestic eagles — well, its a great thematic packaging of an excellent story. Enjoy!

Very Good 3.5
Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman continue to shine as Gandalf and Bilbo, and Andy Serkis continues to amaze as Gollum.Richard Armitage does a decent job as the sometimes stoic and sometimes emotional Thorin
