I totally got the Woody Allen vibe in this movie. And Owen Wilson was a great choice for its center of attention with his sort of whiny, meandering, and sometimes neurotic focus on the romantic ideal of Paris in the 20’s. However, I’ve never thought that Woody did sci-fi comedy very well (sorry Sleeper fans), and Midnight proves – albeit in a dramatically different way – that Woody should stay away from it. Sure, it was fun and even captivating to see interactions with the likes of F Scott Fitzgerald, Earnest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, and Salvadore Dali. But it was all too distracting for a Woody film. What we really needed was more of Owen Wilson. Perhaps even more of Rachel McAdams, although I’m not so sure she was a great choice to channel Diane Keaton. In the end, it was fun – and you really can’t beat a romance in Paris – so see this film, just don’t set your expectations too high.
