Wick's Review

Created Feb 01, 2012 08:09PM PST • Edited Feb 01, 2012 08:09PM PST

  1. Quality
  2. OK 2.5

Entertainment power-broker Lew Wasserman gets profiled in The Last Mogul as Hollywood’s man behind the curtain during the second half of the 20th Century. Almost 50 big names take turns telling tales of Lew, something that would apparently have mortified the secretive Wasserman were he still alive.

The documentary moves along at a decent clip and reveals plenty of interesting Tinseltown tidbits, but is of compelling interest only to those fascinated by the entertainment industry.

  3. Very Good 3.5

Stephen Spielberg patron gets dished on by 20th Century celebrities like Helen Gurley Brown, Suzanne Pleshette and Sydney Pollack. Execs and journalists do most of the dishing however, making The Last Mogul less glamorous but perhaps more interesting.

  4. Male Stars Very Good 3.5
  5. Female Stars Very Good 3.5
  6. Female Costars Very Good 3.5
  7. Male Costars Very Good 3.5
  8. OK 2.5

Barry Avrich seems to specialize in entertainment documentaries.

  9. Direction OK 2.5
  10. Play Good 3.0
  11. Music OK 2.5
  12. Visuals Good 3.0
  13. Content
  14. Tame 1.2
  15. Sex Innocent 1.2
  16. Violence Gentle 1.2
  17. Rudeness Polite 1.1
  18. Natural 1.0

The movie documents the overlapping influence of unions, organized crime, studios and politicians on the movie industry. As to that last, other than Hollywood favorite son Ronald Reagan, Democratic politicians were the beneficiaries of Wasserman’s largess. Nothing’s changed since.

  19. Circumstantial Natural 1.0
  20. Biological Natural 1.0
  21. Physical Natural 1.0
