OK 2.5
I’d describe Reel Steel as a Disney-esque take on Rocky meets Rock-em Sock-em Robots. This family-friendly romp in the world of robot-boxers follows Hugh Jackman (Charlie), a struggling robot owner ends up doing whatever he can to keep going. Stooping to lows such as blowing off debts and selling off the custody rights to his 11 year old son (Dakota Goyo). Of course, being a sports movie, the expected happens and Hugh eventually puts faith in family, friends, and a discarded heap of a robot with heart warming results. Great action watered down by a milk-toast storyline.

I suppose the acting was decent, but the characters just weren’t convincing. From Hugh trying to convince us that he can be bossed around to Dakota trying to convince us that he was a snotty kid – it just didn’t work that well.

OK 2.5
I think this movie would have been a lot better if it wasn’t trying to be so Disney / family friendly; or, if it had gone all the way. Instead, it tries to be both tough and family friendly and doesn’t quite succeed at either. The action was fun and impact-full – but the story watered it down.
