OK 2.5
The story of the Tuskegee airmen is a great one; both from the perspective of a racial struggle as well as a tale of proving yourself on the field of battle. Unfortunately, Red Tails takes an inspiring story and delivers it in an uninspiring way. No, it wasn’t horrible. Lots of high-flying action, taking it to the bad guys, wartime guy bonding, and even a love story. But given today’s expectations of big screen blow-you-away impact, heavy dramatics, and big stars; Red Tails feels more like an old school B-side war movie. You will definitely enjoy it if you are a war movie fan, just don’t expect to impressed using today’s standards.

I don’t have much to add to Wick’s breakout of the actors, but I was a little disappointed that Cuba Gooding Jr and Terence Howard didn’t deliver more. My MVA award goes to David Oyelowo for his role as the most irreverent character ‘Lightning’.

It was interesting to me that Lucas helped finance ‘Red Tails’, but only directed the re-shoots. I wonder if this would have been more of a blockbuster if he signed up for the whole deal like was originally intended.
