  1. Quality
  2. OK 2.5

Set in a perfectly Grimm medieval village in the woods, this movie explores a new take on the Red Riding Hood fable. Valerie is in love with Peter, her childhood friend the woodcutter, but betrothed to the wealthy Henry – and if that wasn’t stress inducing enough, the entire town, and especially Valerie, is living under the threat of the local werewolf — whom we come to find out is probably living among them. Stress indeed. This is a love it or hate it kind of movie. The plot is a bit contrived, but then again – Grimm fables are the definition of contrived. The filming has a ‘Twilight’ feel, with excellent imagery and cinematography, but mediocre acting and story lines that are a bit scattered. A mixed bag to be sure – but entertaining nonetheless.

  3. OK 2.5

Amanda Seyfried is the star as Ms. Red herself, too bad she’s mostly just a pretty face in the film. Not much more from Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons as her suitors. Most interesting is Gary Oldman as the leery Soloman summoned to kill the beast, and Red’s mom Virginia Madsen was decent.
