  1. Quality
  2. Very Good 3.5

How does an orderly gay English professor deal with the death of his long-time partner? ‘A single man’ uses a pointed imagery and an artistic style to take us through a day with George. George is definitely depressed, dealing with his deep anguish by carrying out his life with its perfect order, regularity, and a healthy dose of cynicism. Yet, on this day, George begins to act out and let his whims take him places. Definitely a fascinating movie, a bit on the artsy side – it uses lots of imagery and surrealism to educate us about what is going on inside the man. This movie isn’t for everyone, but if you enjoy well done film-making, you will enjoy this movie regardless of the specific storyline.

  3. Great 4.0

Colin Firth does a fantastic job, as does Julianne Moore. Many reviewers loved Nicholas Hoult, but I couldn’t really see it myself.

  4. Male Stars Great 4.0
  5. Female Stars Great 4.0
  6. Female Costars Great 4.0
  7. Male Costars Great 4.0
  8. Very Good 3.5

I feel the the artsy-close-ups and surreal imagery was a little bit over-used for my tastes, but can also imagine that many cinema aficionados would love that sort of thing. However, the style did get the point across quite well and the filming, including the scenes, wardrobe, etc. was quite good, and the attention to detail was evident.

  9. Direction Very Good 3.5
