Wick's Review

Created Jun 27, 2010 04:10PM PST • Edited Jun 03, 2013 11:18PM PST

  1. Quality
  2. Great 4.0

Day & Night cleverly combined 2 and 3D animation, breaking new ground in the process. It presented cartoon characters of Day and of Night in a 2D foreground plane, while the world of daytime and the world of nighttime are visible in 3D space behind them. It all works magnificently well on screen, after a minute or two of orientation.

The world of daytime is shown to be sunny skies, beach babes and rainbows, while the world of nighttime is figuratively darker, notwithstanding the fireworks that occasionally go off. Clever and effective, this. Day and Night ultimately reconcile themselves to each other, though not before fighting it out with some entertaining toon-like fisticuffs. Pow! Bam! This is a great animated short.

Originally airing ahead of Toy Story 3, it was even better because we knew that the perfect conclusion to the Toy Story Trilogy started as soon as Day & Night’s six minute running time was up. On with the show!

  8. Great 4.0

The story, while thought provoking and frequently LOL, is not as perfectly realized as for Partly Cloudy, the short that preceded Up.
