   Great 4.0

   An excellent immersion in to the porn scene of the 70s. The storytelling is great, the subject matter is intriguing, the experience indulgent, the look at the cheesy side of the time is humorous, and it balances the increasing drama, which eventually takes over as the heyday enjoyment spirals downward in the 80s toward the gutter before its happy recovery.

4. Acting

   Great 4.0

   Definitely an all star cast, and it showed. Luis Guzman with his corny Latino shtick, John Reilly does a nice job as the loyal sidekick, William Macy was classic as a weak porn husband / photographer, Joanna Gleason has a short but well done bit as Dirk’s bitter mom, Heather Graham is a hot Rolergirl!, Philip Seymour Hoffman shows his mettle as a troubled stage hand, Julianne Moore is fantastic as the porn queen with a mother’s instinct, Burt Reynolds is a complete natural in the role of the porn producer Jack Horner, and Mark Wahlberg is a highlight as the 17 year old “talent” Eddie Adams (aka Dirk Diggler).

    Really Great 4.5

    It must have been fun for Paul Anderson to direct this film. The 70’s were not so long ago that putting together the clothes, furniture/decorations, style, and of course, the music was straight forward — but still, the way he pulled it off, it was like re-living the times, only I was personally too young then to really enjoy what was apparently going on all around me :)
