Perfect 5.0
..Midnight Meat Train signals the return of originality to the horror genre. Based upon the short story of the same name from Clive Barker’s “Books of Blood”, Midnight Meat Train is everything you’d expect from a film with that title…although it also contains one very interesting plotline that is guaranteed to warrant repeat viewings to soak it all in. This is not a film for all tastes, however, as it is incredibly gore-soaked in moments. If you are a horror fan, then you owe it to yourself to at least view Midnight Meat Train one uninterrupted time so as to see what shoulda been the revitalization of horror had Lionsgate not fumbled with the release of this film.

Really Great 4.5
Acting is not necessarily going to be the focal point of this film if you find yourself so inclined to watch it, but what you will see are some very nuanced performances for a bloody flick from actors who are typically known for doing so. Bradley Cooper sheds some of the maniacal, deviously grinned jerk that he normally plays to capture the role of Leon, our protagonist who works as an artistic photographer in New York. Vinne Jones plays Mahogany, a silent killer (thats not a spoiler either) that is more menacing for being there not talking than he ever could be by opening his mouth. Mahogany could very well go down in history as one of the greater movie killers. Leslie Bibb plays Maya very well, playing a love interest for Bradley Coopers character who is at the end of her rope with his obsession. Roger Bart plays the friend, Jurgis, whose role is bigger than one may think. And a cameo by Brooke Shields is smartly not played to be a cameo but a genuine important role in the film. Great performances had all the way around.

Perfect 5.0
Midnight Meat Train crackles with brilliance that most horror films never have realized on screen. The script, based on the story by Clive Barker, is smart and fiendish in all of the right places, showcasing just the right amount of lunacy and supernatural elements to offset the fact that this film feels very real in a lot of others. It truly is an interesting balance. The direction by Rhuhei Kitamura is flawlessly kinetic, bringing a different light to a film that would have played gloom and steady hand by an American director. Kitamura makes the film feel as if it never wants you to stop to even clutch for breath, with numerous directorial flourishes that amaze me even now. Watch for a 360 degree pan around the train car toward the climactic battle of “good vs evil” and you will see. I can;t wait to see what he does next. The music is ominous and very ambient, capturing the tone of the movie and the feeling of the city in one swoop, which i enjoyed. Visually this film is a wonder, where even the obvious CGI moments suck you in and send your pulse racing. The CGI felt ludicrous at first but i now understand what it adds to some of the scenes, especially with the way the camera plays with the concept. The genre needs more movies like this.

Horrid 4.5
This isn’t Prom Night 2008, this is Midnight Meat Train, and the name says it all. This movie has more than a fair share of gratuitous violence, featuring a beheading, and eye gouging, numerous battering with a meat tenderizer, the eating of human flesh, the severing of limbs, blood, guts, a disemboweling, the tearing of tendons in the feet, the pulling of teeth and fingernails, and plenty of naked torsos swinging to and fro on a train car. Are there worse movies out there? Oh yes…and the way i described it made it sound like a crazy snuff film that rivals Cannibal Holocaust, which it is not. What this film happens to be is a stylish and yet very violent film that is guaranteed to make the viewer shudder, cringe, and stare at the screen, mouth agape, muttering “Oh My God”. And it’s very fun from beginning to end, to boot.

Supernatural 4.0
as the film progresses, it begins to become more and more supernatural. What starts out with a man obsessing over he thinks may be a murder slowly turns into plotline involving a vast otherworldy conspiracy thata takes more than one viewing, and the reading of the short story, to fully understand. All in all it is a supernatural movie splashed in the reality of our worst nightmares and spread upon a canvas palatable enough to devour the reality and the supernatural as one whole.
