Very Good 3.5
The original manly tear-jerker football movie. So what if it was made-for-TV. Big time movie stars (led by a never better James Caan) and a compelling drama of adversity gamely addressed in the shadow of superstardom make Brian’s Song one for the ages.

Really Great 4.5
Not only James Caan, but Billy Dee Williams and Jack Warden deliver two of their best performances in Brian’s Song.
As the graceful superstar Gale Sayers, Billy Dee Williams portrays the real life NFL legend as we’d like to believe he was: shy, pure and unaffected.
Jack Warden’s performance – along with his role a few years later in Warren Beatty’s Heaven Can Wait – typecasts the persona of the gruff but decent coaching elder.
