Any movie about struggling startups is likely to get my attention - seeing how I have lived that a few times! :) August chronicles the adventures of Tom, the cocky CEO of a startup trying to survive the Dot-com bust, or at least the lock-out period unscathed. Josh Hartnett does a great job portreying the stressed out yet take-no-prisoners Tom who desperately wants to not sell out to investors to stay alive. Adrian Scott plays the back-seat brother and partner Joshua. He and most of the other characters take a back seat to Tom. One of my favorite scenes is when Tom makes an impassioned case for why his company is a game changer in front of his distrusting father (incidentally played by Rip Torn). Funny thing is that, like most CEOs in the dot-com era, you never realy figure out what they are talking about… Of course he goes on to make speeches to the public which have you scratching your head even more…. classic. David Bowie is a brief standout as the seasoned investor that calls Tom to the mat. Music and film-style help give this film a thriller feel, and it definitely holds you because you want to see how it all turns out.
