Perfect 66 Points 2019

The War To End All Wars gets its closeup in 1917, titled after a year little known to we 21st century people. WWI has been largely terra incognita at the movies, even as WWII flicks are dime a dozen, a Dirty Dozen. The struggle against t…

Really Great 17 Points 2017

Stephen King’s version of Nebraska corn farming life. Take a down home farmer in 1922, throw in a twisted psyche, and voila – a macabre cornfield horror-drama. Don’t let the horror genre label turn you off; It is very well done. Even Edgar Allen Poe and Alfred Hitchcock would be impressed.

Good 139 Points 2006

Highly stylized though affecting movie brings a comik sensibility to an ancient battle. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would, since King Leonidas makes a great hero and his wife a worthy Queen.

Very Good 66 Points 2014

300: Rise of an Empire is Greek history through a fantasy lens darkly, prequel and sequel to the ‘06 hit about King Leonidas and his band of 300. The new movie’s nearly 4x Reality factor stems from Frank Miller’s graphic novel, full of vainglorious liberties, supernatural contrivances and hist…
