   OK 2.5

   A good reflection of my own age is the amount of enjoyment I get from watching a gathering of old geezer acting greats. Bringing together the likes of Eastwood, Garner, Sutherland, Tommy Lee, and others was indeed enjoyable. Especially in the context of a space-action film. The story line was great, but I can’t help but feel like the creative energy was missing, and the reliance on the cast’s star power was pretty much all that was going for Cowboys. There were aspects of the film that didn’t fit right and some of the humor seemed forced. In the end, the movie was enjoyable because of who was in it, and less so because of the story itself.

4. Acting

   Good 3.0

   Clint Eastwood – seemed to be just starting to perfect his crotchety persona with this film. As we know from his later films, he’s gotten quite good at it.

   James Cromwell – Always great as an a-hole character.

   James Garner – Somewhat subdued in this film. Maybe he’s too tired for this sort of thing.

   Donald Sutherland – I liked the idea of him playing an aging womanizing roller coaster designer, but he looked a bit tired as well.

   Tomy Lee Jones – My pick for the film: Fit right in as the true cowboy of the bunch

   Marcia Gay Hayden – No nonsense acting, and unfortunately uninspiring.

   William Devane – Was great as secondary antagonist, but good-guy flight director

   Barbara Babcock – always loved her – pairs well with the emerging crotchety character played by Eastwood
